Trina has had a long-standing passion for medicine and plans to pursue a career in general surgery and surgical breast oncology. Trina oversees all FEDAA’s programs to ensure activities between multiple projects are coordinated and that Foundation initiatives stay on schedule, on budget, and deliver success. Joan was not just a founder; she was a visionary, a leader, and a source of inspiration for all of us. Born in Chicago to Greek immigrants, Joan Kayeum earned a master’s degree in political science from the University of Chicago and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. She met her Afghan husband, Dr. Abdul Kayeum, at the University of Chicago, and together they moved to Afghanistan in 1948. In addition to working there as a teacher, Joan was deeply involved in programs to improve the lives of Afghan women. Fluent in English, Greek, and Farsi, Joan is a prolific author who generously donated all net proceeds from her books to FEDAA. Laura manages FEDAA donor relations and stewardship programs and is responsible for promoting long-term engagement and high-value interactions with donors. She resides in Boston, Massachusetts. She taught English in Iran for three years before obtaining an MBA from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School for International Management. After a banking career, she retired as Senior Vice President and Senior Credit Officer from PNC Bank. Her father, Dr. Abdul Kayeum, instilled in her not only his love of country but a sense of commitment, duty and service to others. Four years later, he attended Princeton University. Upon graduation, he pursued a profession within the insurance industry. Over the course of a more than 30-year career, he held various senior leadership positions within CIGNA, UNUM, The Hartford, and MetLife. She is fluent in Persian, English, and French and is familiar with Pashto and Arabic as well. Her fascination with languages led her to major in French, after which she received a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. She taught at various institutions, including the University of the District of Columbia, George Washington University, the Islamic Saudi Academy in Alexandria, Virginia, and King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She is also the author of The Faint Ringing of a Caravan Bell: An Afghan Daughter's Odyssey (with all sales proceeds donated to FEDAA.) After receiving a full scholarship to Dana Hall School, Nina went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Manhattanville College and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Columbia University. She then fulfilled her goal of becoming a physician by earning a medical degree from St. George's University and completing her residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. With over 25 years of service, Nina retired from Advocate Aurora Health Care, a non-profit health system that operates over 500 healthcare facilities. In Kenosha, Wisconsin she founded Aurora’s Women's Center providing comprehensive healthcare for women, including gynecology, obstetrics, breast health, as well as a general internal medicine division focused on women’s health.
