Exploring Afghanistan’s Treasures and Building Bonds That Last
October 2025
“We learned about the strength of Afghan history, how beautiful our country is and how important it is to protect it, but most importantly we learned about teamwork. We planned together, traveled together, and laughed together. That’s what made this trip truly unforgettable.”
Earlier this summer, scholars from the FEDAA Classes of 2026 and 2027 embarked on unforgettable journeys to Bamiyan—one of Afghanistan’s most stunning provinces and home to some of its most cherished historical and cultural sites.
The trips, initiated and led entirely by class captains Mr. Hamidi and Mr. Himmat, were made possible by FEDAA’s Hamkaran Program—a signature initiative designed to foster deep connections, teamwork, and lifelong friendships among Scholarship recipients. Each class is supported with one Hamkaran-funded field trip during their four years of study, helping students grow together beyond the classroom.
For many participants, this was their first time visiting Bamiyan. As outlined in Captain Hamidi’s itinerary, the goals of the trip were twofold: “To explore the cultural heritage and natural beauty of Bamiyan and learn about the civilizations that once flourished there. To strengthen camaraderie, teamwork, and leadership among the scholars.”
Surrounded by soaring cliffs and lush valleys, the students explored the region’s famous archaeological sites—including the niches where the majestic Buddhas of Bamiyan once stood—while also hiking through pristine landscapes and sharing meals together under the stars.
“Seeing Bamiyan was something I’ve dreamed of,” shared one student. “But what made it unforgettable was experiencing it alongside my classmates. We didn’t just learn about Afghanistan—we learned about each other.”
In addition to sightseeing, students engaged in leadership conversations and took time to reflect on their journeys and dreams. These moments are at the heart of the Hamkaran experience. (Hamkaran means “partners” or “colleagues” in Dari—a reminder that today’s classmates may become tomorrow’s collaborators in rebuilding Afghanistan.)
Thanks to your generosity, the entire trip cost just $35 per student—covering food, transportation, and lodging for a meaningful overnight adventure. This modest investment paid priceless dividends in shared memories, deeper friendships, and renewed purpose.
As one participant put it: “This trip showed us that we are not alone. We are part of a family that believes in each other and in building something better together”
Thank you for helping FEDAA scholars not only pursue their dreams, but experience the beauty of their homeland—and one another.
“This journey was not just a trip. It was a discovery of history, of nature, and most importantly, ourselves.”
“This trip was not only educational but also personally enriching. It strengthened my connection to our land and its people, and reminded me how much there is still to explore and protect in Afghanistan.”
“Bamiyan was a truly inspiring experience. It deepened my appreciation for our heritage. I learned that true growth comes from understanding our history, connecting with our roots, and working together with purpose. This experience renewed my hope for a brighter, united Afghanistan.”
